I'm sorry, but I really don't see why everyone is so gaa gaa over TiVo. My roomate got one as a Christmas gift, and it has been horrible ever since. The setup is drawn out, and it still does not work properly.
The fact that it needs a phone line return is absolutely archaic. During setup, which they say is a 20-30 minute call, it kept disconnecting from the TiVo service, and it ended up taking 1 1/2 hours. Then, after it supposedly downloaded everything it needed, it doesn't properly list all of the channels offered by my cable company (Comcast).
On top of that, it has yet to properly record a single program. It always brings up the incorrect channel to record, so it really is less useful than a standard VCR. Mind you, this is after wasting quite a bit of time trying to find the proper codes for my cable box.
One other thing I have noticed since it has been set up, is that the quality of my digital cable has been degraded to a point where I now get frozen images and pixelization.
Considering the service is $13.95 a month, and you can't even select all of the channels offered by Comcast, what is the point?
For $9.95 a month, you can get an integrated box from the cable company which will handle everything for you much more efficiently.
TiVo may once have been a worthwhile purchase, but since most all cable companies now offer DVR service, I cannot see any reason to go out and actually buy a TiVo for $170 or so, and then also be liable financially to replace it when/if something goes wrong, when with the cable co., they will just swap out the box for you.
