This a great piece of equipment in which i have not had one single problem. Ever. It only has 40 hours of record time (in basic mode) but i only need to see a recorded show once before i delete it, so Basic is fine. The picture quality is still very good.
There is an ability to hook this unit to your home network that allows Tivo to use the internet to download its programming. It is pretty simple to set up, the only downfall is that you need to get a USB to ethernet adapter to hook it up to the network. Or you can get a wireless USB adapter to do the same thing if you have a wireless network at home.
OFF SUBJECT NOTE: If you have a wireless network, dont use the default settings. Secure your network.
Back to the Tivo. This unit is a few years old, but there have been several upgrades free from Tivo, which allow you to listen to streamed music via the internet straight through the Tivo. You can also view photos and listen to mp3's that are on one of your computers at home. You can even download programs to your computer and move them to a portable device. There are lots of requirements and a download or two for this. You need to be a little computer knowledgeable to do this.
You typically have a 1 year warranty with Tivo units. If the 40 hour record time isn't good enough for you, there are aftermarket companies out there that will supply you with larger hard drives allowing you to increase your recording time exponentially. even up to 500 hours or more. You can search the web to find these companies.
There are some newer units out there that have some better features including dual tuners, but if that is not a necessity and you can get your hands on one of these units on the cheap, then i would do it.
