The TiVo Series 2 40-hour DVR was the first such device we purchased. And why not? It was a deal we couldn't refuse: the model came free with a few months of pre-paid service. It immediately changed our lives. Now we could easily record programs to watch later, we could pause the television when we had to get up to do something. Best of all, if you are watching a program that you previously recorded or had on pause, you can quickly forward through the commercials or rewind back to catch something you missed.
TiVo transforms the way you watch TV. If you are not a couch potato already, this will turn you into one. It is so much easier and more versatile than a VCR, it's like comparing a model T to a modern automobile. There's no fooling around with tape, it just stays there on the hard drive until you delete it or you run out of room, whichever comes first. You don't even need to know exactly when a given show is on, the TiVo has powerful search capability to go out and find the programs that you want it to. Just input a series title, actor name, program type or other keyword. It's easy to set up.
The catch is the forty hour limit of the box. It seems like a lot, but the memory gets filled up pretty quickly. My idea of saving the Hollywood Park and Los Alamitos racing replay shows and Christy's idea of saving cooking shows for later reference didn't completely pan out. You can keep shows for about as long as you need to get around to watching them, but you can't keep them on the hard drive for too long without running out of room for new programs.
The TiVo Series 2 40 hour DVR worked really well for us, it's easy to use and reliable and the price was surely right. The TiVo service is great, they provide detailed program information and numerous ways to search for upcoming programs. But the 40 hour limit is not enough for more than one person to share. It's a good starter DVR, but you will want to upgrade sooner or later. It's a sound piece of equipment otherwise, so if the price is right you can give it a go.
