If you are a 'videophile' - or even if you have a slight interest in watching clear TV, TiVo might be a disappointment. The image quality is not very good, even at its highest setting. This poor quality is compounded when you have an HDTV or other high-end TV set.
Since TiVo allows you to 'pause live TV', everything that you see on your screen (even when watching live tv) has been 'buffered' by the TiVo. The encoding-decoding process that is being used leaves much to be desired. I've seen better quality in pirated movies downloaded from the internet.
I'm probably going to try a ReplayTV. If that doesn't look better, I'll take both of them back.
DVR's are a big step forward from the VCR, but until the companies figure out what consumers really want out of such a device, you might be better off saving your money.
