lambchops's Full Review: Dolly Girl by Anna Sui 50ml Eau De Toilette Spray ...
Boasting a unique scent within the unique bottle, Anna Suis Dolly Girl is an interesting fragrance. I say interesting as a compliment because Ive never in all of my years of perfume admiration smelled anything even remotely similar.
The first thing youll notice about Dolly Girl is the bottle. Its flirty and girlybasically a pink frosted cartoon head. That will be your first indication of the interesting contents. See, Dolly Girl is not for people who cant handle a little light-hearted humor. Certainly, it smells great but what constitutes that gentle fragrance is rather unique.
With other fragrances to her credit including Sui Dreams and Sui Love, designer Anna Sui impresses with her most recently released fragrance (2003). Dolly Girl is a light, fruity, summery, and airy fragrance that at first smells like something youd expect a young girl to wear. But further attention turns up some surprising details. The overtone seems to be some kind of grapefruit, but it is not. What it is happens to be a lovely mix of fruits, spices, flowers, and even some understated woody notes.
Dolly Girl is a youthful fragrancebut not one for the young, rather for the young at heart. Many sites online over-simplify the fragrance and say it includes just things like cinnamon, bergamot, melon, jasmine, and magnolia. True enough, they are here. But I think its the complex base that makes Dolly Girl a success.
First off, I have to say that anything with even a tiny bit of musk attracts methis has amber and musk, both of which add a warm tone to the fragrance. The veritable bouquet of floral notes (violet, rose, and magnolia) adds an adult twist to the concoction. But what rounds it all out and gives it life is the zesty citrus/fruit vibe which is led by the bergamot and also includes apple and raspberry. Words cant do this stuff justiceits one of those scents that you must smell to understand.
But with that said its not for everybody. I personally enjoy it because of the dusky amber and musk undertones and citrus overtone. Its important to realize that if you have an aversion to fruity or flowery scents, you will not like Anna Suis Dolly Girl. Its not a serious fragrance or one for a formal setting, but it is the perfect summer accessory.
Dolly Girl is available in a number of sizes and a few different formulas. Its not a cheap fragranceId consider it to be in the middle price range. The eau de toilette costs anywhere from about $22 (for the 1oz) to $39 (for the 2.5oz), and more if you shop at more expensive places like department stores or Sephora. Also available are a coordinating 6.8oz body lotion and shower gel. Ive only used the EDT and have been pleased. Its not as popular as something like Thierry Muglers chocolate Angel or even the strawberry-tinged Butterfly from Hanae Mori but it is just as distinctive.
While not perfect (like I said, it wont appeal to every perfume buyer) it is worth checking out. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised by the discovery.
