My son got the Durabrand CD-85 Personal CD Player from his grandma for his birthday a couple of years ago, and has been enjoying it ever since. He even lets me borrow it sometimes.
He has only had one real complaint over all of this time and that has been with the headphones. The reason for this is that when placing them on his head, the headphones actually snapped in two about a year ago. They were not extremely sturdy, but it was a surprise when they actually broke in half.
Aside from the headphones being weak to begin with, I am pleased that this has withstood my son for this long, as my son can be fairly rough on his things. This has been a pretty durable player and has stood up to a lot. I often find it anywhere from tossed in the back seat of my car, or shoved in his backpack after school. I'm surprised it wasn't broken a long time ago.
The sound from the Durabrand CD-85 Personal CD Player is pretty good, although replacing the broken headset with a better one improved the sound dramatically. I really wasn't expecting much from such an inexpensive player though.
He lets me use it sometimes too. I really enjoy the 60-second anti-skip buffer, especially while listening to his player in the car or going for a walk. One of the best things about it is that with the anti-skip feature, you don't have to worry about bumping it and having it skip. It won't skip unless you bump it pretty hard. I have hit some pretty hard bumps in the road and it hasn't skipped.
It does not come with a car kit, although you can purchase one separately if you need one. This makes it more convenient for listening to in the car, but isn't necessary if you are the only one listening. I have taken his player on quite a few road trips without a car kit since I was driving alone and didn't have a CD player in my car at the time.
The Durabrand CD-85 Personal CD Player will also play CD-Rs so I can record my own disks for road trips, and with the repeat function, I know the music won't stop until the batteries (2 AA's not included) do, about 5-6 hours later.
I also like to use the play feature so that I can vary the songs on my disks a little. I wish it played MP3s, but no such luck on that one, so I just have to carry a few extra disks with me for longer trips.
The Durabrand CD-85 Personal CD Player is easily portable for either my son or I. It isn't as small as an MP3 player, but it is a nice size of a personal CD player. The dimensions are:
Width 5.06 in.
Depth 5.44 in.
Height 1 in.
Weight 0.59 lb.
There is also no radio or no other fancy extras attached to this unit, but what do you expect for the money. These sell in Wal-Mart for around $20, and I believe they are well worth the price.
They also come with a 90-Day Warranty, although I had no cause to worry about that.
I think that the Durabrand CD-85 Personal CD Player is well worth the $20 price tag even if you end up having to buy a replacement headset somewhere down the road. I feel that we got well over $20 worth of use out of it, especially with all the wear and tear my son put it through. I am surprised that it held up nearly as long as it did.
