Pros: Good picture quality, many accessories including remote control and car charger.
Cons: Plastic packaging requires cutter or knife. Sound could be a little louder. No carrying case.
My husband and I both had different travel assignments at the same time. He got the laptop, I got the kids. On our way to the Amtrak station, we stopped at Wal-Mart to get a cheap portable player so that the kids would have something to do on the train.
The Durabrand Portable was on sale. We grabbed it, 20 minutes later I was on a train with my two kids and a brand new portable player.
I have few complaints about this product. Complaint number one was believe it or not, the plastic packaging was hard to open. This may seem trivial but when you have two screaming kids who want to see Barney right then and there, having to find someone with a knife or scissors to cut into the industrial strength plastic can seem like an eternity. Eventually the nice guy at the Cafe car found a knife and opened it for me. We were all set. I plugged the DVD player into the outlets that Amtrak provides, and put Barney in. The kids were quiet, everything was right in the world again.
The best recommendation that I can give about the Durabrand Portable is this. My 2 year old lugs it around the house and always has to take it in the car. It's been dropped several times,(this past week in the snow) he's opened it mid-play and it still keeps going. The volume is good enough not to be too loud when it's on full strength and I can drive in relative peace while he's engrossed in Teletubbies or whatever catches his fancy at the moment. It comes with a car charger so we're never stuck in traffic with dying batteries.
The picture quality is good and you can adjust to either wide screen and full screen with the flip of a button. My husband loves the fact that it can connect to any TV in our house and has a remote control. I love the fact that so far it has been indestructible. Other people have mentioned the quality of the sound. I'm partially deaf in one ear and I can hear the audio on this player just fine. I'm sure that it could be louder but with the right headphones, the sound is unbelievable. And even though my manual says that with a fully charged battery it can last for 2-3 hours, I have gotten more out of it. It plays my home videos that I've burned onto DVD beautifully. I now show up at family reunions armed with new movies and my player.
The only other complaint I have about this product is that it didn't come with a carrying case. But that's not really a standard accessory with many portables anyway.
I would recommend this as the perfect gift for anyone.
