Pros: Excellent suction; easy to use and assemble; telescopic wand and hose; lifetime HEPA filter
Cons: Initial price; no height adjustment; no light
The Bottom Line: In the end, a sound purchase. The initial price of the vacuum seems a little steep, but considering the cost of filters and bags, it'll balance out.

All my life, Hoover is all I have ever known and would have likely purchased one this time around. And why not? It is a division of Maytag and it's what my parents bought.
But as I started to compare different models and manufactures, Dyson was brought to my attention. I thought, yes... I remember infomercials about those. So I asked around and did some research and decided I would get one. Since it was an online order, I had to wait for it to be shipped.
A few days later it arrived and like a kid at Christmas, I ripped through the tape and opened the box. Much to my surprise, there were several pieces of what I thought was very cheap looking plastic. By that, I mean it wasnt the type of plastic I would expect from something that costs over $400.
Assembly only took a few minutes after reading through the instructions. It was now time to put my new toy to the test. I first vacuumed my entire living space with my old vacuum (I had just installed a new bag). When it seemed I had picked up everything in the carpet, I checked the bag (which was still empty) and put it away.
I then got the Dyson out and vacuumed the same area again. Initially, I was unimpressed. I expected a $400 vacuum to try and pull the carpet off of the floor and make the pile stand high as it did when the carpet was new. I finished, believing I had made a bad investment.
I checked the trash chamber to see what it had collected. I couldn't believe it! The thing was almost half full of dust and lint. I even caught a glimpse of a safety pin, a penny and some rubber bands - things that would have given my old vacuum fits! I was none the wiser when it picked these things up because it continued to hum right along as I completed my tour. I was now happy with my purchase.
Now, about the vacuum, itself...
It was designed ingeniously when it comes to servicing and use. Removing the debris canister and emptying it is a breeze and it has a HEPA filter that you only have to rinse out when it gets dirty and never has to be replaced. There are several places within the suction path that can be easily removed to clean out clogs or items that may become trapped. The telescopic wand and hose are easy to use with just a few simple clicks. I is not designed like your typical vacuum; the power switch is push button and located just above debris canister and tilting mechanism is simplified by just pushing the suction hood down with your foot. It has only moderate attachment, but I think comparable with others on the market thin wand, brush end and bare floor head.
In the end, I think I have made a sound purchase. Sure, the initial price of the vacuum seems a little steep, but I think when the cost of filters and bags is taken into account, it all balances out. I definitely recommend this product if you have the cash to spend for it.
