ESPN NFL 2K5 sold 800k copies the first week it was out. However Madden sold 1.3M so far. I'd say it was a shot across their bow.

I doubt it... the majority of EA Sports title fans are extremely loyal. The pre-orders on Madden 2005 were ridiculous this year... and double that from 2004... especially considering that Madden 2004 sold 5 million copies across the various platforms. More likely that you'll have most people buying copies of both titles for their libraries. At least Sega won't have such disappointing sales like 2K4 had.

I just want to see Sega do well with one of their games for once... Virtua Fighter 4 and VF4:Evolution was probably the last one to break 1 million units sold... I think Sonic Heroes got thrashed in sales.

Someone told me last night about the attempted coup to knock off EA Sports as the standard in sports gaming. I think the $20 prices are a master stroke and must force EA to respond.

Loved your reviews of both NCAA Football 2005 and this one.

Actually I'm usually busy during PTI. I usually have to cook dinner. Besides the Red Stripe Beer campaign didn't originate on PTI.

I saw that this game was being sold for $20 and thought, "well, that's probably the only way to compete with Madden."

BTW: hooray football...been watching a little too much PTI?

It is a very good game. Maybe it isn't better than Madden when held up to the light of tough criticism, but the $20 price tag certainly should have people consider giving it a flier. Just don't expect the CPU player to give you a run for your money. It really is substandard AI as I'm coming to realize.

After reading your review, perhaps its time for me to finally consider switching over to 2K5 instead of getting Madden. I played 2K2, and was unimpressed, to say the least, but from what you say, they seem to have gotten their act together. Your bit on the drunken, digitized Joe Namath was hilarious. All in all, a superb critique.
