consumerly's Full Review: Uniden EWCI-936 900 MHz 1-Line Cordless Phone
First, I must admit that I didnt buy the EWCI 936 for its fantastic Weather Forecasting Features. I was looking for a Caller-ID phone with a lighted display big enough to see, without having to put the phone in my face. This Uniden model has a base unit that fills the bill. Also, it was a good deal at Home Depot.
Both the display on the handset, and on the base unit are backlit. However, the Caller ID display on the base, only supplies the callers name and telephone number. All other Caller ID features are found on the handset (such as; ID storage, redial, and control). I would have preferred it to be the other way around, with all the control in the base, but it is still very usable.
I am very impressed with the sophistication and intelligence of the weather features of this phone. There are temperature, humidity, and barometric sensors, and some very smart software to provide weather information to the user.
I guess if you are really into weather, you will be impressed. The display indicated RAIN, and sure enough, when I looked out the window it was raining! There is also a button on the hand unit, so if you are outside mowing the grass, and you feel a couple drops, you can press a button on the phone and confirm that it is raining. I would have found this a more useful function, if it had been designed so that you could dial in from a remote location and find out the temperature and humidity at your house.
Anyway, the base unit also displays the phase of the moon, in case you need a Werewolf check, and the tide level in case you live on a beachfront property. The barometric pressure display is an arrow that indicates rising, steady, or falling pressure. This is probably good enough, unless you live in a mobile home, or are on a hurricane watch.
All kidding aside, the software used and the processing power of this unit is impressive!
One other thing, the Outdoor Weather sensor has a number of caveats about where to mount it. It needs to be outdoors, but not in the direct elements. There is a rubber gasket around the rim of the battery compartment to hopefully keep it dry. I did not take the unit apart down to the circuit board level, but I would hope that Uniden used real IC components (maybe even ceramic) and not the black blob of goop over the IC dies, to passivate the chips. This is done for many low-end electronics, and does not hold up to the temperature and humidity extremes. Conformal coating of the circuit board would also have been a good idea. Only time will tell.
In conclusion, this phone has a number of unique features which are guaranteed to delight your favorite weather buff.
