| Urbanmt's Full Review: Emerson EV498 VCR |
My very first VCR was an Emerson, and it just died. Believe it or not, I bought it 18 years ago! It has had it's problems, I've had it repaired once and learned how to unjam it myself a time or two, but it continued to do its job. In the meantime my TVs have come and gone. The TV I have now, for some reason, will only display channels 1 through 13. So if the kids or I want to watch any higher channels we have to view through the VCR channels. Since my old VCR was so old, it only went up to channel 36, so we were missing some channels. So when it finally died a month ago, I decided to let it go this time instead of getting it fixed again. I went shopping... It was a short trip. I found this Emerson on sale the first place I stopped, and I shopped no longer. Being a single mom on a strict budget, and seeing the Emerson name, this purchase was a no-brainer in my world.
The first thing I noticed on unpacking this VCR was that it's about two-thirds the size of my old one, both dimension and weight. A good thing. The next thing I noticed was that it had no digital display on the front. It would be nice if it did have on, but it's not a big deal that it doesn't. One less thing to program right? The remote works great. Setup was a snap, including the cool little feature of automatic channel selection. I pushed a button and it programmed itself for the channels that we have available where we live - all the way up to 51, plus 98 and 99! What a treat! The remote has all the controls on it, and is very clear and easy to use. It has on-screen programming, another new feature to us. Even without the remote (such as when my youngest has run off with it) the buttons on the VCR itself are clearly marked, and laid out in a clear, easy-to-use way.
We fired it up, plugged in a movie, and away it ran, with a sharp picture and crystal-clear sound. This was also a pleasant change for us, as our last one had gotten quite noisy in its old age. We played around a little with the features, and were thrilled to see a sharp still picture when we hit pause instead of the fuzzy blur we'd been used to. When the movie was finished, we hit rewind and it silently brought us back to the start in the blink of an eye, ready for the next time.
The kids are really pleased to be able to watch their movies again, especially thrilled to get all the extra new channels, and I'm pleased to have Emerson quality still - especially at such a good price. We'll remain loyal Emerson users, probably for another 18 years.
