We live back in the mountains and are always loosing power. I needed an alarm clock that would not need to be reset each time we lost power. My husband has a battery operated clock but since we wake up at two different times, he has an alarm clock and so do I. I was shopping at Wal-Mart around Christmas time when I came across the Emerson Smartset Clock Radio. I had never heard of them before but with reading the box, it looked like the clock for me. They were on sale for $9.99 so I bought four. One for my bedroom, one for my son’s room, one for my husband’s garage and one as a gift for our grandparents.

The Emerson Smartset Clock Radio is a dual alarm AM/FM clock radio with SmartSet Automatic time setting system and Sure Alarm. When you plug the clock radio in it automatically sets itself to the correct year, month, date, day and time. You do need to set the time zone and the clock does the rest. When the electric goes off the clock resets itself automatically. This is the feature I love. If the electric goes out in the middle of the night, I don’t have to worry about oversleeping or my alarm not going off anymore.
The clock radio also knows when daylight saving is and adjusts the time accordingly. The SmartSet clock comes with a long life lithium battery backup that can last up to five years. There is a low battery indicator on the LCD screen.
I also like that the SmartSet clock has dual alarms. I use both alarms. I use one of the alarms for getting up for work and the other for getting up on the weekends (when I need to get up early). This is nice that I don’t have to change my alarm every Monday and Saturday.
Another nice feature of the clock is that the FM antenna is built into the power cord. You need to make sure the power cord is fully extended for best reception. I rarely listen to music in my bedroom but when I do, I get a clear station.
The clock is a nice size, it measures 9 x 3.5 x 4. The SmartSet clock has non-skid feet so the clock doesn’t move around. It is easy to clean; I just dust it off when doing my regular dusting.
The SmartSet clock has a sure alarm battery backup system. If the electric is off when your alarm is set to go off, a buzzer will go off for thirty seconds and then shut off. I have never had the electric off when my alarm was suppose to go off so not sure if this feature works or not.
The front panel of the SmartSet clock has a large LCD screen. On the screen you will see the AM/PM, the time, if alarm1 or alarm2 is set, day of the week and the low battery indicator.
The top of the clock is silver and houses the speakers, month/date setting button, alarm 1 and 2 setting button, alarm mode button, radio on/off button, set plus and minus buttons, sleep button , time zone button, time setting button and snooze button. The alarm mode can be set for three different settings: everyday, weekdays or weekends only. You can wake to the alarm or to the radio. I always use the alarm because the radio really doesn’t wake me up. If you hit the snooze button, the alarm will go off in another nine minutes.
The left side of the clock radio is where the alarm 1 and 2 selector switches are. On the right side is where the tuning control, radio am/fm selector, and volume control are. The buttons are decent size and easy to use and set.
The back of the clock is where the power cord and backup battery compartment is located.
I have had my Smartset Alarm Clock for at least five years and it is still working as the day I bought it. I use it every Monday through Friday as an alarm clock and sometimes on the weekends. It gets used as a radio occasionally but not too often. I have never had any problems with it. It has always worked. All four of the Smartset Clocks still work as intended. My husband, children and grandparents all like their clocks.
I purchased the Emerson Smartset Clock Radio at Wal-Mart. I haven’t looked for the clock recently so not sure if they still sell it or not. I think the Smartset Clock Radio would make a great gift for anyone in need of an alarm clock radio.
If you are looking for a new alarm clock, I would highly recommend the Emerson Smartset Clock Radio.
