It does hurt some, but all hair removal hurts some. I got this to avoid the mess of cleaning wax off of my skin and every surface in the bathroom (and I always found sticky spots on the floor after I mopped with special wax remover stuff). I also hated having to wait for the wax to heat, having to buy more wax, or paying someone else to do it.
So this thing hurts different than waxing. The hair comes out in much smaller bits, so there's more pulling sensation. I have a high pain tolerance (injury, piercing and tattoo-wise), so I won't call anyone wimpy if they can't take it. I'm not a normal person that way. I'm also not as hairy as some people. I can use this thing for my legs, armpits and a full brazil with some discomfort. I've had it four months and am really getting the hang of it by now.
It isn't easy to get into the little "caves" of the body; the head of the epilator is kind of hard to navigate in my armpits. Wax was way superior for that area. The results also don't last as long as waxing did for me. I think more hairs get broken instead of pulled clean out.
Ingrown hairs cause me the most pain by far. I loofa like mad and still have some problems with it in the bikini zone.
A couple of tips:
1. Make sure you take a hot shower first. It's like night and day, how much easier it makes it.
2. Don't use it in the week before your period. Hurts a lot more then.
3. If your hair is long, use the shaver head a day or two before then epilate the growth.
4. If you haven't waxed before, go make an appointment before you buy this. Find out if this kind of hair removal is for you, pain-wise. I think it hurts more than waxing. Also, it'll be easier to get into it if you're removing the regrowth from a wax.
5. Pull the skin super tight with your other hand to get better results and less pain.
6. Be patient with yourself. It'll take some time at first but after a few uses it got much easier. I've gone from an hour to get everything to thirty minutes in four months.
What I like best is getting rid of all the hair when I feel like it (no waiting, no appointments, no running out of wax) and vacuuming all the hair up afterward. It's a much cleaner procedure than wax. I don't mind doing it at all.
