| wytman's Full Review: Epiphone Pr-100 Acoustic Guitar |
One day at age 27 (then) I was talking with a friend about "things we wanted to do but never did." One of mine was to learn to play guitar. I have always loved the instrument - in all genres from rock and roll to classical. So, I decided there was no point in not learning anymore and went shopping for guitars. I quickly found that just about every one of the "big names" (Fender, Gibson, Yamaha, Ovation, etc) had a line of cheap, entry level guitars. The guys at the store (Guitar Center) referred to them as such - some also called them all campfire guitars.
After about 30 minutes of deliberation, I decided that my fret hand fit most comfortably around the neck of the Epiphone PR-100 so I decided on that model. Sound was a secondary concern to me since they all sounded great - although they also all were different. I found that the Epiphone seemed to have to right "blended" sound whereas the Yamaha (which I was also considering) seemed to be a bit more "twangy." Admittedly, this could have been due to the strings chosen - but I didn't know about that stuff at the time, so I let the neck decide for me.
So, I bought the Epiphone and almost immediately took to it. I have been playing for a year now. Overall, this is a quality guitar. It stays in tune very well - especially for a self taught "hack" like me :). The sound is outstanding in my living room (where I usually practice) and I generally feel the fret board is easy to get around.
Now that I have learned a fair amount (in my judgement anyway) I am considering getting a new guitar - something in a solid top. Still, the purpose of this guitar was to get me started without spending a lot of money. It served that purpose very well - as it would anyone in my opinion. I will continue to play my Epiphone even when I finally do pick up a solid top.
