acmemfg100's Full Review: Escort Solo S2 Radar Detector
So, having used a V1 for some time and acknowledging it is an excellent detector, I felt the need to go cordless mostly for use on my motorcycle. I had a Beltronics 945 once (not a good radar detector at all!!)and for bike use it was handy. I had used the V1, but having to hook up a separate headphone jack and hardwire a power source both of which you must be concerned with, as well as getting everything under cover at the slightest hint of rain...I thought I'd try the Escort. Well, figuring a bit of real world testing was in order I simply went old school to see which one gave the most practical warning; after all...that is really what these things are purchased for, right?? Where is the nice officer with the radar and how soon will I get told it's time to hit the brakes before I'm in his sights??
Pretty straightforward test platform..I mounted the Escort directly below the V1, turned both on and went to see what was going to happen.
Seems the V1 went off much more frequently than the Escort. Not sure what it was detecting, but it wasn't police radar. The Escort was mute until something tangible was on the horizon. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. The V1 is notorious for going off when picking up the presence of another radar detector. I was running up I 75 a month ago and the V1 went ballistic indicating Ka radar behind me...no police in sight. Signal got stronger and stronger, no police. V1 arrows indicated the radar was alongside me...as was a large Buick with some sort of detector stuck on the windshield. As he passed, the V1 arrow shifted, following the Buick..certainly not a police car.
The Escort only wanted to go into alert in cases of radar (be it X,K, or Ka) being around. Bad things are absence of the directional arrows (they do come in handy) and the volume isn't all that loud...gotta keep the XM radio down or you won't hear the @#&! thing. So what's my plan? Keep both. The V1 is a superior unit from my perspective, hyper sensitivity notwithstanding, but the Escort does a good job, has a built in earphone jack, and is easy on-easy off for motorcycle applications. Both are pricey..so are tickets.
