Even Your ( GASP! ) Husband Will Enjoy Cleaning the Floor

Written: Dec 24 '00
Pros:Simple; Effective; Easy to Use; Easy to Cleanup
Cons:Doesn't Work on Carpet

Well....maybe enjoy is not exactly the right word, but at least he shouldn't run out of the house screaming if you suggest he clean that dirty kitchen floor.

Ok, I admit it. I have a bit of a floor fetish. I can't stand dirty floors. One of the chores my wife doesn't really have to push me to do is vacuuming. Now, she does get a little irritated when I push aside clothes, vacuum, and then push them back to go to another area of carpet, (you see, I don't consider dirty laundry on a clean carpet dirty per se, but strangely she does). We have three dogs too, so vacuuming is at premium especially with one of our little ones approaching the crawling stage (he's only 3 months old, but mom is very pushy).

Still though, despite my fetish for clean floors, it never made me REALLY want to clean the kitchen floor. I mean, you have to get on your hands and knees to get that nasty floor clean, and forget about those cheesy, cheap little mops with that filthy little pad at the end. My wife would use one of those and the floor would look worse and feel stickier than before she started.

But that all changed with her clever little purchase of the Eureka Enviro Steamer Deluxe 310 (EESD for short). I was immediately intrigued by the simple, lightweight design, the cool yellow and black coloring.

"What detergent do you put in it," I asked her.
"None," she replied coyly. Was she playing on my fetish? Trying to reel me in and rid herself of kitchen floor duty forever?
"Hmmm," I said, obviously hooked. "How to you squeeze out the dirty water?"
"No squeezing," she replied trying to hide a smirk, "It stays in the pad. You just throw the pad in the washing machine after you're done."

SACRILEGE

"How does it work then," I asked, "With no detergent and no squeezing?"
"It steams up the dirt, the pad wipes it off the floor, presto clean floor."

I had to try it. "Lemme see it," I said. She handed it to me and left the room. To this day I think she's used it once. My fetish compels me before she thinks to act.

The beauty of the EESD is its simple effectiveness. You simply unscrew a cap on the base of the unit, pour in a measured amount of water, turn the unit on and leave it on its resting pad until you can start to see steaming rising. Please make sure you put on the cleaning pad (which attaches very easily to the unit) BEFORE you turn the unit on and see any steam. Do you really want to explain that one to the Burn Unit at your local hospital?

Once the unit begins to steam, you're ready to go. Take the EESD off the resting pad and start pushing it across the floor. You'll be amazed at what this little device will clean up. Scuff marks, Play Dooh, muddy footprints, and all other forms of kitchen spoog that finds its way to the kitchen floor. The EESD is light and glides across the floor, leaving a satisfying wet shine in its wake. And you won't break your back like you do bending over that bucket of Clorox water.

We have a moderately sized kitchen floor, and one fill-up of the EESD is all it takes to get the whole floor spotless. If you have a larger floor, simply refill the unit with water when the steam stops rising. Of course, be sure to unplug the unit first and be careful of any water spitting back at you. After the floor is clean, empty all water out of the unit (again, easy to do), and wait for the pad to cool down before you throw it in the washing machine. That's it. Your floor will be gleaming and you spent less time than taking a shower.

One other note of caution. As the EESD is a steamer, it is not suitable for all floors, especially the stick-on-square variety. It could heat up the glue and loosen the squares, so check your type of floor before trying the EESD. Also, while you can leave the EESD in one place for up to eight seconds to lift those stubborn messes, leaving it in one place for too long can also damage the floor (it gets hot!).

Well, there it is. I am so old now that my fetishes revolve around clean floors. Someone, please shoot me. I'm sure you all have more interesting fetishes than I, but please, keep them to yourself.
