I've finally had some free time lately, a break from my usual routine of work and school to the point of masochism. I've been trying to catch up on all the fun stuff I've missed out on. I haven't written a review in a while. Let it be enough that I'm writing this review for F.E.A.R. to demonstrate how AWESOME it was.
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay in FEAR is awesome. The tactical fps engine for the game is top notch. The enemy AI is great, the will work in teams, and act and behave like real squads, they will try to ambush or flank you. The communication between the enemy combatants adds to the natural feel of the action. The controls are tight and you move through a very realistic world. It's a very good fps.
Now, combine that with Ringu (The Ring), and you get a really intense, often startling experience that will keep your adrenaline up and you in the edge of your seat.
GRAPHICS
The graphics for fear are top notch. When I thought my system together, I thought it would be years before something could put a dent in it. BOY was I WRONG. I have a 6800gt running at 6800 Ultra speeds with a 2.2ghz athlon 64 and a gig of 222 ram. The game has an analyze option and recommended settings for your system. I used those, and at 1024x768 resolutions, I ran through the game with very little to no slowdown. Using fraps, I didn't have a lot of spare room at times. This engine will push all the latest graphics features to the limit if you let it. Even at the recommended settings and resolutions, this is one of if not the best looking games I've seen. The artists use the graphics EXCEPTIONALLY well to craft their realistic and eerie environments.
AUDIO
I don't know where to begin. They should make a gaming class, and in that class, they should make content developers listen to, play this game. This is what sound and music and ambience should be. The sound blends amazingly well with the graphical effects and environment and ambience. It does more than anything else to shape this game.
STORY
While the story isnt highly original, (pretty much blend action fps with Ringu), the game tells the story and executes exceptionally well. This game is less about the story, and more about the spooky intense experience.
SUMMARY
This is a MUST PLAY game for both fps fans as well as people who like horror/spooky games. I put FEAR up there with Eternal Darkness and Undying as some of the best spooky atmospheres ever created.
