~The Baby of All Air Conditioners~
Written: Jun 03 '04 (Updated Jun 03 '04)
My very first Air Conditioner purchase consisted of a very affordable Fedders model #A3X05F2B. It wasn't a bad air conditioner considering I was using it only for my bedroom. Little did I know that 5200 BTU's really wasn't all that much. My guess is that I over worked the poor thing, and it's no wonder that I only used it for ONE year. I have just recently upgraded to a 10,000 BTU Fedders Air Conditioner.
This Fedders air conditioner is a very very simple air conditioner to use. No frills or fancy stuff, but instead, just the basics. First I will tell you about that this air conditioner is fairly light weight, and easy to install. Simply take it out of it's box, (they do give you directions) then you will need to put the side panels on it, and place it in your window. Plug that baby in, and you're in business. It's that simple.
It's not that big either, it's exact dimensions are 15.13" deep, 12.25" High, and 18.63" Wide. The color is pretty stand for air conditioners these days, being a cream color painted, galvanized steel cabinet that helps to resist corrosion, with the face plate being made of the same color only in plastic. You have adjustable air vents, and an easy to clean slide out filter. This air conditioner will fit windows that are a minimum of 12 and 3/4 high, and it fits windows that are 19" - 36" across. I don't think you would have any problems trying to get this little guy to fit your standard windows though.
It is recommended to keep that filter clean, in order to do this, you need to have your air conditioner turned off, and then simply pull the tabs on the filter in an upward direction, and the screen type of filter just slides right out. You can wash the filter under hot soapy water, rinse and then just shake it dry. Replace the filter and turn your air conditioner on for a few minutes, and it's all dry. Keeping the air filter clean is essential for maintaining the life of your unit. It is recommended to check and clean the air filter every 2 weeks. I don't think that's such a big task considering it takes just a minute or two to accomplish.
With this particular model, you have just two very simple dials. The top dial is used for turning on the power of your air conditioner and also clicks into place at 4 different settings. First you have High Fan, this allows you to simply use the air conditioner as a fan. You also have Low Fan. Next stop would be High Cool, this will cool the room the fastest, but I don't think you will want to leave it on this setting for long periods of time. Once the room is cooled to the desired temperature, it's safe to turn the knob to Low Cool which is the last setting on the first knob. It's really that simple. Just below the top knob you have your temperature adjustment. As I said before, it's nothing fancy, but instead just a simple turn of a dial, sort of the way some cars have their temperature settings. You can go from Warmer all the way around to Cooler. When you find that happy medium then you're all set. There's really nothing to it. This air conditioner is so simple to use, that even a child can figure it out.
My son now has this air conditioner in his small room. I have given it to him for two reasons. It doesn't do what I need it to do for my larger bedroom, and since he suffered from heat last year I decided it would be perfect for his smaller room. 5200 BTU's really isn't much, and really you shouldn't make your small air conditioner try to do the job that a larger one should do. This has proven to be an excellent air conditioner for smaller rooms only. I have to say though, I have had slight problems with it. It seems that I over worked this poor baby last summer because toward the end of the summer I found that when I turned it on for High Cool, it didn't always kick on. I would either turn it off, and then on again waiting for that low hum, or I'd have to give it a wack, and it would kick in. I'm sure it's something minor to fix, but I just haven't done it yet. It's working fine for my son, but I think he tends to choose the Fan settings more so than the air conditioning settings.
There is no remote control, because there is nothing digital about this air conditioner. It's got to be the most simple air conditioner that was ever made. I made my purchase at Wal*mart and paid only $88.00 for it. I would say that it was a pretty cheap price, and pretty simple features.
