Just a couple of weeks after the F5 was introduced I started my research on it and decided to drop nearly $3,000 for the body. I must say, this was one of the best photographic moves I have made in 35mm.
The camera offers all the bells and whistles you could imagine; program-mode, auto aperture, shutter aperture, and of course manual. In addition to that you have 3 metering options; 3D color matrix, center weighted and spot metering. Of course, there are also custom settings available, some only through software purchased separately.
I have found the auto-focus to be incredible at speed and accuracy. Doing some night shots, lit only by the moon and limited outdoor lights, the camera was able to hold a focus more accurately than I was. When teamed up with a 7 frame per second + motor drive (when using the Ni-MH Battery Pack), it is the perfect combination for sports and fast moving events.
The only major fault I have experienced is when using AA batteries instead of the Ni-MH battery pack, the battery life is quite short, sometimes as low as 12 rolls of film, when using automatic rewind. In addition, the camera is a little on the heavy side, especially with larger lenses and flash, but it feels solid, and is comfortable to hold.
There is a bit of a learning period with the F5. With so many functions available, time should be taken to learn them as well as possible. I admit, I haven't learned them all, sticking to the ones I'm most comfortable with.
I would recommend this camera to anyone, pro or amateur, that has the money to spend and wants top of the line equipment.
