| victory48's Full Review: Focal 165K3 Car Component System |
I have tried a number of two element component speakers before but this is my first three element set. I have used Bostons, MB Quarts, and Infinity but they don't compare to the Focal 165K3.
Any speaker you purchase is only as good as the setup and amplifier you use to drive it. I can only attest to the performance of this speaker set based on how it is set up in my system.
I am running an Eclipse head unit and I have an Eclipse 800W 4 channel amplifier bridged to two channels to drive the 165K3. It is delivering a clean 240W to each channel. The midrange and tweeter are mounted in a Q-Logic kickpanel reinforced with fiberglass to increase it's rigidity and acoustic quality. The 6 1/2" midbass speaker is mounted in my front door panel with double-dynamatt insulation to again improve the acoustic quality. My system is completed with a 1100W Eclipse 2 channel amplifier driving two Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1 subwoofers in a custom sealed box(to be reviewed elsewhere). All of this runs through an Audiocontrol EQS equalizer.
With all of this in mind these speakers rock! They are extremely accurate and have no discernable distortion at high volumes. You can turn up the volume until your ears bleed with no distortion. I have turned the volume to max on my system, and I had to leave my vehicle because of the db level, with no noticeable distortion. They are simply amazing.I have not had the pleasure of hearing the Utopia series but I can't believe that they could be that much better. The three speaker set gives you a full range of sound with midbass, midrange, and higher frequencies associated with vocals. You can really see the advantage to a three speaker system over a two speaker with the range it gives you. The quality of these speakers are fantastic and I would recommend them to anyone, just make sure you have room for them.
The Focal 165K3 retails for about $1000 but can be had for less. I paid $532 for mine and it was well worth the price.
