Pros: Pure sound quality, small speaker and box requirement, perfect build and looks.
Cons: Must use at least 4 of these or more for daily listening at elevated levels.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this sub for all SQ lovers that are not really chasing high SPL. Excellent allrounder, but must be used in packs so total price might end up steep.

| the_belgian's Full Review: Focal 5WS Car Subwoofer |
I've recently had the privilege to be able to listen to a well known French blue Peugeot 306 equipped with a full Focal Utopia speaker setup, and Audison VRx series amplifiers, using a cd I know thoroughly. This car has won the IASCA World SQ Championship in its class in 2002 if I'm not mistaken.
I'm going to focus just on the subs here. It used 4 of these in a 26 litre enclosure (approx. 0.8-0.9 cu.ft. total for the 4 drivers) in the trunk, and another 2 on top of the dashboard. I don't think these were dialed in loud, since they were barely moving.
The Quartet in the trunk surely was though !! I was very impressed. I didn't expect too much from them, but for any basic SQ needs they fit the bill perfectly. Since they go very low for such a small speaker, they'd even be suited to Rapmusic if you use enough of them (but that would be silly, since 8 of these would set you back more than twice a decent 12 or 15 would for the same output -- for a reference : I use 2 sealed enclosure Adire Audio Tempest 15's in my car, and you would need at least 16 5ws drivers to get the same "bump"). The output in this car was comparable to a good 10". So 2 of them would be enough if they're just being used for laying a fundament to the music.
The SQ : 1 word can describe this. Perfection. They blended in perfectly with the frontstage, they had no problem whatsoever with very complex basslines and they even represented what can be described as a flat response down to the lowest regions of the human perception. But the car does have an Audiocontrol EQ somewhere in there, so I wouldn't be surprised if it helped matters a bit.
Still, the best sub setup I've ever heard.
Please notice that the car was an IASCA SQ World Champion, so it's quite normal that it's the best I've ever heard (and I'm used to auditioning extremely nice SQ competitor setups).
