Pros: Truly remarkable sound. A superb speaker that plays hard rock to classical without a hitch.
Cons: None. These speakers are exceptional.
The Bottom Line: Whatever you listen to, these speakers will faithfully reproduce it. I highly recommend listening to these before purchasing any other speakers.
pradis's Full Review: Focal Access 165 CA Coaxial Car Speaker
I purchased these at Car Toys after listening to everything they had in coaxial speakers. I listened to vocal (Varttina), Funk (C&C Music Factory), Rock (Oasis and Aerosmith), and classical (Edgar Meyer). The results weren't even close. The Focal's won the day by a long shot.
What did I like about these speakers? Well, I am very picky about sound. I enjoy good low-end response, but I don't want it overwhelming the rest of the sound stage (except with good funk). I want smooth highs and tight mid-range. I want a clear, "presant", sound that isn't fake or over processed. This is true especially with vocal music and delicate classical. That said, very few speakers in the under $300 catagory can really fit this bill. The Focal's met every challenge head-on.
The high's are bright, but not harsh. The mid's are clear and vibrant revealing incredible nuances in the music. I hear background sounds I haven't every heard before. At higher volumes, the sounds remain crisp and accessible. My ears don't get tired like they did with the factory speakers. The music stays ahead of the volume.
The listening environment is a 1999 Ford F150 pick-up, regular cab. I have an Alpine Head, the Focals in the front, B&O 6x9's in the back, an Alpine V power, 4 channel amp, and a JL Audio Wedge 9" sub. Except needing an amp for the back speakers, the system really kicks. I can get loud enough to hurt my hearing, and yet also listen to very delicate, instrumental work as well.
The only drag was paying $80.00 for the install. They had to fabricate an enclosure for the speakers because the truck's opening was the wrong size. Still, it was worth the cash. My system sounds stunning.
