| laserone's Full Review: Fujitsu LifeBook P1120 (FPCM20101) PC Notebook |
I just recieved my Fujitsu Lifebook P1120 (P1000-series) laptop a couple days ago and already I am convinced it is the best computer I've ever owned.
I bought it because it is so tiny and lightweight. I already have a very good, very heavy, Gateway laptop w/ a huge screen, but it's weight makes it a pain to bring anywhere (and hurts my joints when it's on my lap and I put my feet up).
This laptop is so small it goes in my PURSE, and it's not a large purse either. Without the battery I think it's about 1 pound 7 ounces according to my kitchen scale. It's advertised as 2.1 pounds if I remember right, but w/ my extended-life battery it's about 2 pounds 7 ounces with the battery in.
I opted for the optional high-capacity battery for extended life (it replaces the standard battery) for $59, and I actually like the little .5 - .75 inch extension that the high-capacity battery adds to the front of the machine as it provides a nice place to rest your wrists while you type.
In my case, the external floppy drive was included for free. I did not buy the optional external pc-card cd-rom drive, because I found it to be overpriced at $134. I found one at TigerDirect.com for $79 and ended up getting one off ebay for $38.
It comes w/ a spare "eraser heads" as I call them, the little pointer that sits between the GHB keys, but it does not come w/ spare rubber feet and I must say that after putting this tiny laptop in my purse and pulling it out twice, one of the feet (rubber pads) already popped off. So beware that they are not on as securely as they could be. (But the foot went right back on and has not come off again.)
Because it's so little, the keyboard it tight. I have girly fingers, so it's not too bad of a problem although I tend to make the same typos over and over (which leads me to believe that it's just a matter of time before the learning curve kicks in and I stop doing that). I have trouble finding backspace, slash, comma, period, and I keep hitting up-arrow instead of shift. But I am sure that this can be overcome w/ time, anything is learnable. [[Update: after just one more day I can type like wildfire w/ very few typos.]] If you have big, manly fingers, you may find the keyboard too small. My husband has average guy hands and does not find the keyboard prohibitively small.
The touchscreen is a great feature and being female I have the luxury of using my fingernail instead of the stylus.
The speakers are horrible but let me tell you, plug in a set of headphones/earphones, and you can't even test maximum volume without hurting your ears. The sound w/ headphones is amazing. (I have the Sony earbud style earphones that sit in your ear and wrap up into a wind-up case.)
I plugged in a USB mouse and it didn't require any setup at all. That may be more to Windows XP's credit, but still, it makes for an easy-to-set up laptop.
I use the wireless LAN capability alot at home. I wish it had built-in bluetooth, but a simple USB bluetooth adapter works just fine. I wish it had FireWire.
The screen is bright and crisp. I can't even handle it at it's brightest, which may mean that in bright light it's good, although I have not tried that yet. It's way brighter than my gateway laptop. Even w/ the P1120 set to 6 out of 8 brightness, if I then switch to my Gateway laptop, the Gateway display seems really dim at it's brightest.
I do admit that I'd like program windows to open faster, drop-down menus to show up faster, so I suppose it could be faster in general, but it's pros WAY outweigh the drawback of it being a tiny bit slow.
When I ordered mine, my confirmation email from Fujitsu said that I recieved a free trial of T-Mobile Hot Spot WiFi service, which means that if any coffee houses (or whatever) in my area had T-Mobile WiFi, I could use it for a free trial period. This is actually really great except I live in a one-horse town and can't use it because there aren't any T-mobile hot spots. You can go to http://www.t-mobile.com/hotspot/ and see if there are any in your area. Honestly, T-mobile is a brand name so there are probably many places in my town or your town where you can use NON T-Mobile WiFi.
Bottom line, I am in LOVE w/ this thing and would recommend it to anyone!
