| rbarger's Full Review: Fujitsu LifeBook P1120 (FPCM20101) PC Notebook |
The Fujitsu P1120 is a WORK-HORSE. I have had mine for just under 3 years now and I wouldn't do without it. It's small size is so convenient -- it takes just half the space of my full size laptop and is very light. I have the extended battery which extends the size about 1 inch out from the original size, but very much worth it. The battery life is close to 8 hours. It is a bit slow, but gets the job done. I use it mainly for a second e-mail, web browsing machine and an occasional Photoshop/drawing since it has a nice touch screen, though this can be a bit cramped at times.
There is a new tablet Fujitsu that is the exact same size and looks to be at least twice as fast. As the earlier review said, 800MHz but not compared to an Intel CPU. It is more like a 500MHZ Intel speed, but again, light, long battery life and small. If this is what you are looking for this is the deal.
The keyboard is small, which I don't have a problem with, however the key layout of the cursor keys and some punctuation is in a different location than a standard keyboard and this really does bite when it isn't the only computer you use. (I have 4 computers and the Fujitsu Lifebook S6xxx series is what I use mainly -- it is a great computer too, btw -- but maybe a later review for that one).
As stated previously, the speakers leave a lot to be desired, but since there is no CD-ROM, and no DVD player this really hasn't been an issue for me. You can still hear out of them, they just aren't very good, or very loud even at full volume.
The laptop has built-in LAN, wireless LAN (optional, but you should get it), and a modem (never used it) so it gets me hooked up to everything quite nicely.
As far as installing software on it goes, this can be quite the trick if this is your only computer, as there is no floppy drive, and as previously mentioned no CD. So what I did was network map my desktop PC's CD-ROM and used it for installs. To do this you need to make sure to "Automatically Reconnect" otherwise if it restarts and is expecting the software to be there it will fail.
Anyway...Bottom Line: Thumbs Way Up. Buy it as a second laptop or as a first laptop if you have a desktop PC to use. Not recommended as the only computer you own.
