Pros: Good looks, wide slots, Bagel function, and a Cancel button
Cons: Very slow, takes multiple cycles to toast bagels, done toast not raised enough to remove
The Bottom Line: Try a different product. This is made soley for Wal-Mart (and is so marked) by their factory in China, under GE license. It takes WAY too long to toast.

| no_goats's Full Review: General Electric 169137 Classic 4-Slice Toaster |
Epinions lists this toaster as "no longer available". Not true - it's presently (2008) sold in the 2-slice and 4-slice variety in Wal-marts. I bought the 2-slice version, which isn't listed on this site. It's identical to the 4-slice version, but the 4-slice version is really two 2-slice mechanisms in one case. So I'm posting here. I have read all other reviews.
It's a nice-looking toaster, with many controls, including a bagel setting that turns off the inner two heaters, so only the cut edge of the bagel toasts. When the toast is done, it's well below the top opening, so there is a function that lets you raise the toast one-half inch further, to assist in removing the toast. This works fine for bread, but for english muffins and bagels, this isn't nearly high enough. There is a toast darkness dial, that goes from 1 (lightest) to 10 (darkest). I have to set it on 7 or 8 for plain toast. I have to put it on 10 for bagels, and run them through twice to get any hint of color on the bagel. For dark bagels, three times is the norm.
Another point is that the toaster is SLOW. It takes so long to do a bagel, that I regretted not purchasing the 4-slice version, so I could do two bagels at once. My old Proctor-Silex was many times faster than this, and on that old unit, the toast was so hot it almost hurt to remove the toast. On this toaster, the toast is so cool that there's no danger of burning your fingers.
There are two other controls, which I haven't tried: Defrost and Reheat. Also, to stop the toaster in mid-cycle, there is a Cancel button.
The outer case doesn't get hot, so that's a plus.
