planotexan's Full Review: General Electric Wireless Optical Mouse (HO97990)
This is a 'pretty' mouse, feels good to the hand. That's where the good news ends.
The instruction manual clearly states that the mouse supports the Windows XP operating system. It's fairly easy to follow. It gives a phone number, as well as a web site, to technical support.
I installed the mouse and followed the manual up to page 11 for Button Programming. "Program any of the [three] programmable buttons by selecting the desired function from the drop down menu."
What drop down menu? The menu has 'System Default' and then lines titled 'F1' through 'F7'. What does that mean???
I called Tech Support and waited 20 minutes for my spot in the queue to be answered. The woman who answered put me hold for another 5+ minutes while she researched my question. When she returned, she asked what version of mouse I had bought. She guided me to the bottom of the mouse where, in near-microscopic letters, I finally found 'Rev. 2'. She then proceeded to tell me that Revision 2 does not support Windows XP (despite the labeling).
I was incredulous. I asked, "Does this mean I should return the mouse to the store and purchase a mouse from a different manufacturer?" "Yes," she answered.
Not deterred, I wrote to Tech Support at jascoproducts.com. The reply stated that the mouse had not been tested for XP's SP2 security patch and referred me to Microsoft for support.
At Microsoft's site, I find MS does not support third-party hardware. A user forum newsgroup stated that third-party manufacturers will have new downloadable drivers where needed to SP2. Not so for this mouse, however.
