| awc0204's Full Review: GE VG4275 VHS VCR |
My first VCR was a Sony Beta II, cost over $800 and the only remote control function was pause - and that was via a 20' cable. Haven't we come a long way in 25 years?
When my old Teac VHS machines both needed belts and servicing, it occurred to me that I could buy NEW for less than twice the amount of having them serviced. Perhaps thats the sad truth about the throw-away society we've become, but I just couldn't justify having the old ones fixed.
I went looking for a nice cheap stereo VHS machine with the usual features and found these for $58-bucks!!! Nothing fancy, but they do all the basic functions nicely. The thing I especially like is the search feature.
A few criticisms:
1) Why not have the (elapsed time) clock just come on automatically when in FF or REW?
2) Why not let me program what I want done at EOT? I'm an old 2-track stereo reel-to-reel man and have ALWAYS left my 1-direction audio tapes wound tail-out. I firmly believe that rewinding tapes (especially those in these little plastic cases) and storing them long-term in the rewound state is just asking for trouble. I'd just as soon have the tape simply eject at EOT - but I know I'm fighting an uphill battle on this one.
3) Seems like the programming could be much easier - especially the edit function. If you want to edit the 1st thing on the screen (channel) you might just as well delete and start over. The machine won't remember what was in a particular field once it is cleared for editing and each field is cleared in reverse sequential order. Pain....
Still, a nice little machine for $58. I have FOUR - one in the Bedroom for viewing and three in the Rack in my electronics shop for off-air taping (kind of a poor-man's TIVO setup - we haven't watched a live show in ages...). I was actually looking where to buy 3 more when I stumbled upon this site!! One of the three will be to replace a Toshiba in the living room that I absolutely HATE and cost $120!
