tailbone's Full Review: Garmin GPS 76 Handheld GPS Receiver
This is a great GPS unit! I use it while boating, kayaking, hiking, fishing, camping and driving. I purchased this unit for $307.00 on www.scubasteve.biz. Scuba Steve answered all my question and provided a great service and fast delivery of the product. I purchased some of the mapping CD's as well Bluecharts for boating, Metroguide for driving and the TOPO cd for hiking. This software allows you to upload detailed maps into your unit. The software provides great detail of the area and really increases the usefulness of the unit.
I have had no problems with the signal reception. If youre in a building the GPS is not likely going to work; however, this is the best reception I have ever seen. I have had no problem with tree cover in the woods. I recommend that if you are going into the woods that you start it up before entering this helps the unit stay locked on to the satellites.
For hiking I suggest getting the TOPO maps from Mapsource. This will give you some trails and landmarks that Metroguide will not provide for you. And if your doing boating get the Bluechart maps they provide great detail along with potential fishing spots. Metroguide will provide detailed city maps and information.
The unit allows you to upload 24 megabytes of information to it. This is enough for a lot of maps. I would not go with a GPS with any less than 24 megabytes. This amount seems to be just enough.
The screen size on this unit is perfect. I would NOT go any smaller. It would be too small if I mounted it in my car, ATV or boat if I did this. By getting this size you can use this unit for all applications in my opinion.
Garmin makes mounts for most every application. I have a mount for my ATV, boat and vehicle that work great!
Garmin makes a much better product than their competitors. Their software seems to be more complete and accurate and have better reception capabilities.
GPS has been a great tool for me. I am able to mark my favorite fishing spots, find restaurants and addresses with Mapsource software - Metroguide (my wife like this less driving around), find my way out of the woods. I recently saw this website www.geocaching.com looks like another good activity for the GPS take family trying to locate hidden caches.
