mrgizzard's Full Review: Garmin GPS 76 Handheld GPS Receiver
Back in my more naive days, I once went ahead with the purchase of a Garmin GPSMAP 76CS Receiver. Because I could be called a bit of a spelunker, and I frequently make global treks, I figured a global device like this was right up my alley.
I was right. Purchased for a relatively cheap amount of money, the Garmnin GPS Receiver was a hell of a bargain and stacked up against my old devices. In case you aren't familiar, a GPS is a Global Positioning device that uses satellites to show your coordinate locations. I got a lot of use out of my Garmin. It was pretty easy to use once I got a handle on the manual, though a bit bulky.
I programmed in the coordinates of my house and other locations of interest, and was able to give them titles such as "Home" and "Crash Site". Some GPS devices have trouble locating signals, but this was rarely a problem with my Garmin. I could use the device when I was far from home, see how far I was from my intended destination and which way to go, etc.
I even used it for games such as Geocaching. This is a wide spread game where in people hide objects in specific locations and release clues on how to find it. You start out with a set of coordinates, and once you reach them, you continue on to the next until you arrive at the end. I found some pretty weird things in those "games", things that wouldn't make much sense to me until years later.
For more serious endeavors, I wouldn't recommend this Garmin. The screen was not too big, not too small, and pretty easy to view. I came to the conclusion that the Garmin was a powerful piece of electronics.
Little did I know how powerful.
Flash forward to present day. Now I'm no where near as stupid to carry a Garmin (mine met its end when Raaden smashed it up and buried it in lead in the Nevada desert. Those of you who read my last review know that Raaden left a message for me in Pat O'Donnell's SUV.
But that is another story entirely. I advise you to turn to the general nonfiction section to hear the rest, and find out what you need to know. Now.
NOW.
