live4java's Full Review: Garmin GPS 76 Handheld GPS Receiver
I own one of each of these models, the second purchased as an upgrade so I could use the older 76 as a backup. The 76 itself replaced a Garmin 48 (another lovable little unit) on my boat. Both were available on-sale for around $200 at the time of purchase.
The difference between the 76 and the 76Map is the inclusion of basemaps in the 76Map, versus just navigation lights etc on the 76. There is a color version of the 76 for a lot more money.
GPS and WAAS receivers are identical.
Both units can take points of interest, waypoint, and route uploads. Accuracy between the two has been virtually identical and with WAAS enabled can be within 10 feet.
Satellite acquisition time is acceptable, but not overly fast and they do like to have a clear view of the sky.
Form factor is less than ideal for hand held or automotive use, but they are designed for the marine market. They work fine for hunting down the occasional GeoCache if you are so inclined. They're "bigger than palm sized" and if that's what you're after, a eTrex would be a better choice.
Both come with a 'hardwire' cable that would let you wire into 12vdc power from your boat, and get NMEA output to other instruments, as well as a cigarette lighter adapter. Mounting brackets are available.
Overall accuracy and reliability have been flawless, and Garmin's support with firmware and database updates has been great.
