| dano40's Full Review: Gateway PLSM42TV 42 in. EDTV-Ready TV |
This is my first review ever written so here it goes...I began my shopping experience by hitting all the typical big box electronic retailers...Best Buy, Circuit City, Tweeter and Sears and did my homework by reading reviews on the web. I must say, that is always best to form your own opinion on anything and that goes for travel, restaurants, you name it. Many reviews that I have read (including here at epinions) were not favorable to the Gateway line.
After any exhaustive search and the realization that this is "rocket science" I decided it best to let my senses make my decisions. How does the damn tv look !!! It appears that the South Koreans have cornered the entire Plasma market and it is the future. Best Buy did not stock any plasmas and like most typical Americans, "I want it now !" so I left. It looked like Samsung was the value leader. All of the other retailers had basically the same stuff and the knowledge of the staff varied tremendously, I will leave it at that...I was frustrated to learn at my last stop, that the Samsung did not have speakers and using my surround system constantly really disturbs the rest of the residents at my home, By the way, that Samsung varied in price by $350, so shop it if that is the model you desire.
Determined to see it all, I drove another 50 miles and visited the Gateway store and faced the dilemma of having to pay sales tax in Maine vs the no tax in NH. This turned out to be a great choice.
The Gateway operation is a class act...the sales staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and there is no pressure. The store itself is wonderful and makes the shopping experience a pleasure. It was a little blasphemous for me to be there, because I am a devoted Apple user...but that is another story. The Gateway and Apple stores are very similar.
My decision was very simple, for $3299.00 the Gateway 42" Ultrabright was it. The picture looks great, the controls are user friendly, it has everything I wanted, the 24/7 tech support is too good to be true (they answered the four times I called on the first ring !) I defy you to do a blind test of more expensive models. Honestly, picture quality relates to the picture signal. When I pump my DVD into this Plasma, it is amazing. The operational manual is the best that I have ever seen, they have color pictures for all of inputs/controls and it easily explained..wow.
In this day and age so many manufactures leave you high and dry, salesman at these stores change daily, no one is truthful, operations are complicated and repairs are impossible. Gateway deserves a pat on the back for a great tv and a great buying experience.
Go out and form your own opinions but at least take a look at one of these babies !
If my opinion changes, I will be back to make note of it....
