Background:
Two weeks ago, one of my friends purchased the Gateway AR-230. He told me that it was a great purchase and highly recommended that I purchase one. Three weeks later, I bought my own. This device is feature rich and even that is an understatement.
Features:
For starters, with the Gateway AR-230, you can record TV shows. You can record 6 hours on one 4.7GB Disc (that’s approximately 3 movies worth). The other night, I went out to a bar around 8pm, so I knew that I was going to miss the Thursday Night lineup on NBC. So, I put in my disc and with one click, I recorded all of my shows (from Friends to ER). The next night, I watched the shows and then erased them. You can reuse the same disk over and over again.
The IEEE 1394 input allow you to burn DVD videos directly from your camcorder, while the RCA Input allows you to make perfect copies of your videos from your VCR onto non-degradable, digital quality DVDs.
Progressive scan DVD playback and multi-channel Dolby Digital (AC-3) make your movies come to life!
The on-screen display allows you to easily adjust the settings for your DVD recorder. For example, if you have a young child, you can set the parental controls.

Maintenance:
I personally have not encountered any problems with the DVD recorder. However, I did get myself a 3 year warranty and was told to send it back in case I encountered any problems. I’ve had the AR-230 for 4 months and have yet to have any qualms for physical problems with the player. It seems very durable. I highly recommend this product.
