| dontmesswithme's Full Review: Gateway DC-M50 Digital Camera |
I wish I got worth of what I paid for. Absolute waste of money. I bought the camera few months ago when it just came out. I couldn't find any reviews on it before I bought it and I was relying on the Gateway name. Big mistake. I bought the camera primarily to take pictures of my baby boy who is one year old now. Unfortunately, I couldn't get even a few good shots of him yet as he moves around a lot. The reason is the wonderful focus which takes for ever. This camera works only if you are taking a picture of a huge rock or something which you are sure will never move, with your camera mounted on a tripod. These kind of perfect situations seldom happens in real life. I was surprised when I got blurred pictures of stationary objects. Even the disposable cameras have better auto focus than this one. I couldn't find any usefulness in this camera. I didn't return it because I can't afford the $45 restocking fee. I wonder where all the 5 Million pixels are when I download the picture to my computer. Most of the time all I get with their auto settings is a dark picture (I use it mainly for indoor pictures) with no background visible. I get some good pictures when I try to test the camera with stationary objects and different manual settings. After all what is the use of a "point and shoot" camera if none of the automatic settings give any good results? The colors reproduced by the camera are good either. Red objects appear to be orange.
I read a review recently about the camera in which the reviewer (professional)pointed out the similarity of this camera with an Argus model. They both look alike. I think, the only effort from Gateway in the design of this camera is putting their name label on the product. I went for the costlier 5 Megapixel thinking that it would be better than 4 MP. The 4 MP Gateway looked much better in quality (just the look) when I compared both in a Gateway store.
I thought they made the 5 Megapixel camera affordable for the public when I saw the price and fell for it. I think Gateway has ruined their name by trying to be the Jack of all trades. I have a Gateway computer which was bought in 2000 and is working perfect without any problems. In an effort to offer diversified product line Gateway must've outsourced this cheap piece of junk. I am glad that I learned the lesson with a $299 camera rather than an $4000+ plasma TV.
I would think twice before I buy anything from Gateway again.
