Pros: 5 megapixel picture size, low price, manual/auto controls, easily available batteries and memory.
Cons: Sometimes the focus and the picture recording can be a little slow.
The Bottom Line: A great camera for the photo amateur who wants large 5 MP images, a choice between auto and manual controls, and the ability to focus both CLOSE and far.

| dentaldoc's Full Review: Gateway DC-M50 Digital Camera |
After using 1.3 megapixel and 2.1 megapixel cameras for family and vacation snapshots, I found that I wanted the ability to enlarge my photos without noticeable pixellation. This camera fulfilled that goal. The 5 megapixel images allow for substantial enlargement without loss of quality.
The main feature which impelled the purchase of this particular 5 MP camera (instead of competitive models on the market) was not only its price, but its ability to focus in macro mode at a distance of only 8 cm -- that's just over 3 inches! At such a close approach to the subject, the camera must be aimed carefully to get a valid focus, and it must be held with a steady hand. After a little practice, I was able to use the macro focus to produce the clear enlargements I had dreamed about.
Unlike the earlier point-and-shoot cameras with their smaller images, this camera has a wide range of controls. I have used the focus mode changes and exposure compensation controls with good results. You can also set aperture/shutter speed priority, correct for white balance, and choose image size and quality.
I bought some AA NiMH-rechargeable batteries and keep a couple of spare sets on hand. Battery life may vary, depending on how much you use the screen and how much you choose to try out all the controls available. My advice is to use rechargeable batteries for ANY digital camera.
The combination of manual/auto controls, easy storage on CompactFlash cards, the easy availability of NiMH rechargeable batteries, and the great 5 MP picture size made this a very satisfying purchase for me, at a great price.
