siamesemuzzle's Full Review: God Loves Ugly [PA] by Atmosphere
If you're into rap music and you've never heard of Atmosphere, then you're really missing out on a great indie rap hero. Atmosphere's main rapper, Slug is a lyrican genuis as far as a dysfunctional rapper goes. This album is full of energy, odd and complex rhymes and narrative story telling. This is Atmosphere's forth full length album. Atmosphere consist's of Minnisota based Rapper; Slug, and producer and D.J, Ant. The front cover as you see is a big ugly picture of Slug. If you just saw the C.D and had no idea what kind of music it was, I don't blame you, I was the same way. I borrowed it from a friend who had it, who told me I'd enjoy it, even though I'm not much of a rap fan over all. And he was right. The beats are old school and the lyrics flow with despair. Slug is like the underground version of 2 Pac, as far as the fan base goes. They both have a large following who seem to follow their words to the heart.
1. Onemosphere- This song starts out with a really weird trippy sound effect going on. The beats remind me that of the video game Alice. Atmosphere sounds like a white version of some old school rap group like, Run DMC.
2. Bass and Movement- Starts off with some Beastie Boy like beats, and talking samples. Slug does a nice Insane Clown Posse sounding falsetto note. The songs full of dirty lyrics, sexual references, and angry images. Slug sounds like someone who freestyles very very well. But since he didn't, it just isn't as interesting.
3. Give Me- Fancy beat, some cool saxaphone, and soft jazzy Warren G style rapping, self gratifying lyrics. What else can you say?
4. F*@k You Lucy- The constant theme of Lucy seems to appear in Slug's lyrics. He seem's to really have loved this girl. It kinda starts out like a Fugees song, but it actually reminds me of an Eminem, the name of the song won't come to my mind, but it's about his ex wife. Slug does a really good job rapping at parts of this track.
5. Hair- This song starts off with all kinds of T.V samples of people talking, ect. The R&B roots are shown through at the beginning harmonies of this song.
6. Godlovesugly- The title track, and one of the best tracks on the album. It starts off with some girls talking about how ugly Slug is, with some piano and beats over it. The rest of it is just typical slug rapping some lyrical genuis over top or a really cool beat with piano.
7. A Song About A Friend- Another song that starts off with some weird dialouge. This song has really jazzy beats and music to it. Slug does a pretty cool thing with his voice here. He raps one line, while another is kind of rapped over it at the end of each line. Interesting.
8. Flesh- The drums in the beginning are really cool. The lyrics are just downright vulgar, about drugs and violence you could say. It reminds of DMX at the beginning in a way. There is a lot of old school sampling in this song. The other rappers on this song are I Self Divine and for The Emporer And Ther Terrorist.
9. Saves The Day- This is another song that Slug kind of reminds me of Eminem. I like Slug, but I don't really like Eminem so it's bizarre. Ant does a good job with the beats in this song. There is a cool flaminco sounding piano, some guitar and drums. Slug's rythmes really flow well on this song.
10. Lovelife- It starts off with old school drum beats, and some heavy bass notes. The violin doesn't hesitate to stand out either. The lyrics are depressing and sung low and mellow. Slug seems to be self hating on this song. Just go look up this Virgo's lyrics for this song.
11. Breathing- This song is a mix of some trumpet and old school sounding rythmes in the background. The vocals have echo's and are rapped a lot more upbeat then a lot of the previous tracks. ''So just pour me another, and just ignore me my brother''. This is another one of my favorite tracks on the album.
12. Vampires- This is another song that features a lot of flaminco sounding guitar, with drums and bass. The vocals are sung a lot like the Warren G again. The lyrics to this song are really good and metaphorical.
13. A Girl Named Hope- When this song starts it sounds like some old song from a movie in the 30's. One of the best things about this album is Ant's beats. Don't get me wrong Slug is just as much of Atmosphere and Ant. It's really cool Slug doesn't just go by his name, Atmosphere rather. In the middle of the song there is some weird soul singing. Ant seems to be a very interesting guy.
14. Godlovesugly Reprise- This is only a minute of some weird arabian beats and Slug and another female doing some small vocals with him. The songs under 2 minutes.
15. Modern Man's Hustle- This is another depressing love song, that the lyrics flow right together. Some of the beats in the middle of the song sound like a really cheesy early 90's Boyz II Men type of group. No offense to any fans of Boyz II Men.
16. One Of A Kind- That is exactly what Atmosphere is. A one of a kind rap underground sensation. Kind of a funny little intro, followed by some more soul singing. This is another one of my favorite tracks on the album. Slug kind of reminds me of the white version of O.D.B on this song.
17. Blamegame- This is a really weird track at first. The beats and samples are kind of mysterious. This is another song that can standout on the album. Slug's rythmes change each song, like it's a whole different style of rapping, without changing his style.
18. Shrapnel- The last song on the album! I know, it's depressing if you've enjoyed reading the review as much as I did listening to the album. It's another song with kind of arabian beats. Slug raps softly and smooth on this song. The second part of the song is a pretty interesting way to end the album. Really odd beats and strange noises and talking.
