ninjan's Full Review: Gran Turismo 4 for PlayStation 2
First of all im a big fan of GT3 having bought a PS2 specifically, and only, for GT3 (IMHO Xbox and even DC were better than the PS2, its just that PS2 had the superior marketing and branding at the time...)
Back to the review though, heres my thoughts about GT4:
- The physics have been well updated and now is much closer to a sim than GT3, i thought GT3 wasnt really that great of a sim too many arcade like aspects... GT4 with the Logitech Driving Force Pro is GREAT! and when you drive it feels quite close to what youd be doing in a real car, albeit at higher speeds and more driving risk as you dont have the fear of crashing factor to worry about..
the braking and turning is what you would likely expect if you were driving in that location in real life.
- Licenses remain and i like how you get awarded with a car for each of the medal categories you achieve eg. all silvers, all golds...
- There are more tracks in this than GT3, always very important to me as I always that i isnt hard to include a lot of tracks in a game... Most of the classic old ones are back plus a few new ones and some great 'real world' tracks. HOWEVER, they couldve put in ALL the old tracks from previous GT games AND had a lot more real world tracks, quite a few of them are modifications to one track, eg. the three fuji speedway tracks...
these should be one track with sub selection... they couldve modeled all the f1 tracks or at least a few and more classic tracks instead of a heap of japanese tracks...
- there are more cars in GT4 than any other... though once again theres the problem of "how many different types of civics do you need???" as fas as Im concerned that shouldnt really count towards the total car count... I want more real different models.. (or even the main range of cars from manucturers...Honda Legend, Holden Commmodore base sedan, Mitsubishi Magna yeah yeah its a bit aussie biased my list) AND ONCE AGAIN no ferraris, lambos, porsches, not even the koenigsegg... the old excuse of not being given permission is very suspect... when other crap racing games can have these cars...
- theres no multiplayer replay saves!!! im still trying to comprehend this fact... if you race a lot with your friends then you know how important this, and to not include such a basic function, especially a racing game, is inexcusable! (i know PGR2 deosnt have this as well and its also rediculous, the lame excuse here was cos its got Live... well enable saves only in offline multiplayer racing!)
- STILL NO damage implemented at all! I dont really care for cosmetic damage though it does look nice... what I hoped for was some mechanical/physics damage... when you smash your car into another car or barrier headon at 150km/h there should be some sort of performance penalty/handling penalty experienced, if not totally end the race... all you can do with GT4 is set a time penalty where your car can only go at 50km/h for 5-10 seconds...
its somewaht of a start i guess...
- Load times are still very slow... Im too used to the xboxes very fast load times...
- Graphics of track and environemnt are more detailed and seem sharper with more photo realistic backdrops. Cars though, are pretty much the same as in GT3, close up they are ugly and very low on detail... nothing compared to the cars in PGR2.
Overall, If you are into decently realistic driving sims with a bit of arcadeness and a lot of cars (esp japanese) then GT4 is still the King (forza motorsport for xbox i still havent tried...) and GT5 will probably be as well... but polyphony have only really done one thing and thats make the physics more realistic than GT3. which is pretty pathetic considering hte hype and promises before GT4 was relased. But seein as they dont have a lot of competition from other games... In a perfect world GT4 would be avavilable for Xbox as well with all the optmizations the xbox can handle.
