Well, it's better than what I had, but a pain

Pros: It looks pretty good
Cons: *long time* to set up, limited compatibility
The Bottom Line: Do some research (more than I did, at least!), and find something more widely compatible than this card.

| eholmes1's Full Review: ATI RAGE FURY MAXX, (64 MB) AGP Video Card |
I purchased a custom built computer last month. I'd picked this video card because it was in my price range, and I liked the little I read on the manufacturer's page. I wish I had read more, like the FAQ that included the info on what operating systems it worked with!
To save money, I hadn't ordered an operating system with the machine. You can imagine my joy when I had to make a trip to Staples and blow an extra hundred dollars on Win98, the *only* OS this card works with. That information was *not* in big print anywhere. I should have known, sure, but I was still pretty mad.
Things got better once I installed Win98. Of course, they couldn't have been worse, since the card couldn't even be recognised without it. However, it still took me several hours (and many times booting into safe-mode)to figure out that all graphics acceleration needed to be turned off. Once I did that, and did some minor tweaking, things were fine.
It surely looks much better than the one megabyte video card I had before. I haven't put it through any serious paces, but it's worked with the games I've played, all of which are probably not very graphics intensive... I think it's pretty nice, now that it is working. At the same time, I can't help but think that there must be something better out there. I don't have much experience with other cards, but this one is just too finicky for me. I'm scared to fiddle with the graphics settings, since it took so long for me to get them so the card would *function* in the first place! If I had known what it would entail to make this card work, I would not have purchased it. It will be one of the first things I get rid of when I decide to start upgrading this computer.
