| Techru's Full Review: Matrox Millennium G400, (16 MB) AGP Video Card |
Well, Matrox is and has been one of the best video card manufacturers for a long time. With the G400 and the G400Max, they've created a new niche. Not the dual head niche, that's been around for a long time from manufacturers like Appian. But the AFFORDABLE dual head niche. Under $200, not about $1000.
Okay, so 1 drawback vs. the more expensive dual head cards is the 3D capabilities. Matrox has great 3D in these cards, don't get me wrong. But other manufacturers give the 3D engines more power than Matrox did with these cards. It's still quite capable; and, to some extents, more advanced with the textured bump mapping.
The 2D is hard to surpass; from any manufacturer, at any price. So day to day application use is outstanding. Plenty of RAM and huge amounts of RAMDAC (which is like the horsepower).
The dual head capabilities are very nice. In Windows 98, you can have different monitors at different resolutions. In NT4 and Windows 2000, that is supposed to be an upcoming feature. So far, you just get one big desktop across both monitors.
The added desktop space and the gains in productivity that can be achieved far outweigh the cost of the card and a second monitor. Businesses are finding this out every day. For the home user, it might take a bit more to justify the cost. All I can say is find a way to justify it!!
Gaming goes to another realm. You can bring multiple views of the road course in a driving game up on different screens, or look at a put from 3 different angles all at the same time. Talk about low scores!!
They are about to bring the next generation G450 to market. And from what I've seen from that, it's going to be even better. More RAM, more RAMDAC, and better display resolutions and support. It just keeps getting better!
