| dbodily's Full Review: Matrox Millennium G400, (16 MB) AGP Video Card |
I was given a Matrox Millenium G400 video card to install on a users machine since they needed More Video Ram and the user wanted to have video capabilities. I read up on the Matrox card and every thing looked great. Easy to setup, 3D capability, true color capability, and just a all around great video card.
Well If you are in an enterprise environment, or an environment where you have PC-to-PC connection software, there is something that is essential to installing the matrox card successfully. Any PC-to-PC connection software must be disabled before installing this video card.
I spent 12 hours trying to get this card to see more than 16 colors. I called matrox and they ask me if I have PC anywhere loaded onto the PC. Well PC anywhere is not the only product that has a problem with this card. The SMS software also has a problem with this card. After disabling the SMS software I rebooted the machine and then installed the Matrox Millenium G400 video card. I used to most upto date drivers form off the web since the drivers shipped would not load due to the SMS program being on the machine.
Upon rebooting what a difference. The PC was clearer than I have ever seen a Dell Optiplex GXi ever. The Autocad Program looked awesome based on a comparison of to equal computers running the same software with exact same hardware except for the Video cards.
The video quality was great. The tech support was excellent though slow to get to (I called on a Canadian Thanksgiving day in Oct 1999). I was able to resolve the Issue on the third call to tech support. and I spoke with the same tech twice.
The quality of the card is 5 stars, tech support is 5 stars, hold time was extremely long giving it 2 stars and that is being generous, web support although it was informative and gave a lot information was designed more to sell the product so it get 4 stars, the Matrox card therefor deserves a 4 star rating.
I would purchase this card for my personal use. and I would recommend this card. This card would have received a five star rating if the documentation had of steered me to the problem that I had encountered. The SMS software is not common to the Matrox Tech support people. The Matrox cards are generally sold to the home end user and not into an enterprise computing situation where the SMS program is used highly. The Windows NT drivers work excellent.
Matrox Millenium G400 receives 4 Stars
