| laladien's Full Review: harman/kardon DVD 101 DVD Player |
It wasn't long after I watched a few movies that I become enamored with my new Harmon Kardon DVD player. Having already been familiar with their receivers, I had to admit a slight amount of skepticism when I saw this DVD player. After perusing the internet and locating as many reviews as I could find, I came to the conclusion that this DVD player would really be a fantastic addition to my home theatre.
I was a Sony fan at the very beginning and owned 3 separate players. Each one was good, but had trouble reading specific discs, mostly newer titles. I also found the 2 second dual layer transition to be a bit annoying and these factors drove me to find something new. Thankfully, the Harmon Kardon delivered the goods... and then some.
The picture quality is incredible. I have a 32" Sony Wega and have hooked the player up using Comp. video cables... and all I can say is WOW. The colors are vibrant, the details are crisp and there are no visual distractions of any kind. Using the coax. input, I hooked it up to my Harmon Kardon DTS receiver and have found bliss in the incredibly rich sounds offered up by this player. There were slight nuances in the sound that I had never heard and this fact alone made it a worthwhile purchase. Seriously, the sound and picture quality is second to none.
As far as features go, the DVD player comes up a bit short here. For the $300.00 price tag that it has, one would have assumed that you could play SACD or DVD-Audio, but such is not the case. Given the sound quality of the unit, it's a feature that is sorely lacking, but didn't deter me from the purchase. The menus are very basic, which is fine by me, and the remote seems a bit sluggish. These are all minor issues and certainly aren't anything I have a huge problem with.
Overall, this is the perfect amalgamation of picture and sound quality... and is easily the best DVD player I have had the chance to own. It isn't perfect and the lack of SACD or DVD audio support is sorely missed, but the overall unit is quite, quite good and is a must if you're looking for a fantastic theatrical experience in your home!
