pricemc1's Full Review: Logitech Harmony® 659 LCD Remote Control
I bought this remote not knowing anything about it and being somewhat concerned about its price. Prior to this remote I had a cheap $35 RCA all-in-one remote that I spent a good deal of time setting up but I couldn't explain to anyone else how to use.
The Harmony remote has more than exceeded my expectations. It has truly turned my home theater into an easy to use system that anyone in our house or a guest can use without being a techno-geek.
You program the device by attaching it to your computer with a USB cable and then going to the Logitech-Harmony web site to run through their configuration wizard. This point is one of the few criticisms that I have of the device, it requires an internet connection to program or modify its configuration. If Logitech ever discontinues this device then it's owners are pretty much up the creek if they need to update their device configuration. The plus side to this design though is that the Harmony website is constantly updated so you can pretty much count on them supporting just about every piece of electronics equipment you could imagine and a few that you cant.
When you go to the Harmony website it asks you identify all the equipment you have in your home theater then it asks you questions about each piece of equipment. By answering these simple straight forward questions the web site is able to completely understand how your home theater system is wired and make up a custom configuration for the remote. The wizard then downloads this config to your remote and you are good to go.
No macro programming or other silly complex steps are required to do advanced operations with this remote. For those people who have some really wacked out requirements just about everything on the remote can be manually configured through the Harmony web site if needed. Additionally, the remote supports an IR learning mode for any remote commands that they dont know about.
The remote has a pretty complete set of buttons but it might not work well for a DVR system. I think Logitech makes a more advanced model that specifically is designed to handle DVR equipment as well but this is not an issue for me. It also includes a small LCD screen but its not very useful because of the limited amount of characters that it can display.
Overall I cant really imagine a much easier remote to setup and use. I only wish Logitech included better docs and a way to config the remote without connecting to their website. I highly recommend this device if you have 3 or more devices you want to control from 1 remote.
