wet_chicken's Full Review: Logitech Harmony® 659 LCD Remote Control
On Jan 3, 2006 I wrote a review at http://www.epinions.com/content_216347020932 and I stated that this remote was excellent, but the programming website was unavailable making the remote unusable.
Fearing there was no action taken on this, I didn't try to reprogram my remote until recently.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Logitech listened to their customers and released a program which runs locally on your computer!
New users might find the program confusing, but this isn't your $19.99 as seen on TV universal remote. This remote has programmable activities such as Watch a Movie, Watch TV, Listen to Music, which all have dedicated buttons. You can also make your own activities which are available with the more activities button. Go figure.
When starting, you configure all of your devices, and then set up your activities.
The program offers a wizard when setting up a new activity, which is helpful with its wide knowledge of TV's, VCR's, DVD players, surround sound and standard sound systems, and most items that are controllable with infra-red.
During the setup of the activity, it is possible to customize every control button on the remote, using any device assigned to the activity.
You can also select a specific device to operate at any time. The program also allows you to customize every button on the remote for each device. If you are in an activity, and select a device, you can select the same or a different activity, and it knows what is going on and changes things as needed! This thing rocks!
If you press the Media button, this is a feature that has TV listings right on the remote. You can specify favorite channels and the programming on those channels will display first, and then you can scroll through those, or change to all listings. This is customizable in the programming software.
All this can be seen with the backlight, which has a fixed timeout of about 10 seconds. They could upgrade this feature if you hold the button down it stays on for a longer period (such as a minute or two), or indefinitely.
This remote is a great buy, and is as simple or as complex as you need.
