***** - 5/5 stars
I've been a walkman fanatic since my days of junior high (grad student now). I've always enjoyed "traveling in stereo" everywhere I go. Some of the various makers I've sampled for headphones are the following: Sony, Toshiba, JVC, Koss, and RCA.
Many of the headphones I have bought mostly came with the original units (CD, cassette, etc). I started searching for quality headphones when I seriously started listening to various genres of music and wanted quality listening.
To date, I have yet to find a better maker for headphones than Koss. I have routinely bought their products and been very pleased with the reliability, quality, and durability of their headphones.
The KSC-50's seamlessly handle mids, hi's and especially lows. The stereo sound is agile and very active. Each instrumental sound was there and handled well. I was very impressed with their ability to handle the bass/lows I enjoy so much. They're great for Rap/Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, and Rock music lovers. Anyone who enjoys hearing bass come through lively, tangibly, and in a full-bodied manner will enjoy the KSC-50's.
I did notice that there are some levels that just didn't 'translate' and came through as a very low hiss, but with clips for less than $20, you won't get studio quality. The treble can be a tad 'glassy' also. I mean glassy in the sense that the treble didn't possess great body and seemed a little empty. Nevertheless, the mids and bass more than made up for it and blended well for quality sound.
Wires to both clips were covered in rubber material. The clips themselves seem to be built sturdily. Have a nice and clean appearance in silver with black ear pads. The insertion tip was gold covered also.
Luckily my MP3 player had a customizable EQ. After playing with the settings, I found the settings needed to optimize the KSC 50's exceptional sound.
For a quick comparison, I tried the included headphones to see if there was a difference. The bass and clarity were strikingly present in the KSC's and put the included ones to shame. In fact, it kinda angered me after spending $150 plus for a MP3 player that SonicBlue didn't at least attempt to include quality headphones. After considering the KSC's price again, my anger passed easily.
As far as comfort goes, they did not pinch and were fairy comfy. A little tight around the back of the ear though. The clips seem to have some sort of rubber to help with comfort. I was surprised they the clips were not spring adjustable. They hang in place but cover the ear well. If active (jogging, running, aerobics), I'm not sure how well they would stay in place since they hang in place.
Overall assessment: For clip-on headphones, less than $20(US) these headphones are nothing short of impressive and capable. If you have the money to spend on quality headphones, spend it on the KSC-50's. These are the ones to beat.
