sube5186's Full Review: Labtec Elite 840 Consumer Headphones
First, let me say that I whole heartedly agree with "shido6". I think many people will simply overlook these great headphones because of their ridiculously low price. I've listened to dozens of headphones in my 30 plus years as an audiophile. Believe me, these babies can hold their own with some of the best. I've compared them with my $200 Beyerdynamic professional studio monitor headphones which I purchased almost 20 years ago. I've actually come to prefer the LabTecs. They have a deeper bass. The 840s have huge 50mm drivers. Most full size headphones have either 30mm or 40mm drivers. I can only attribute the difference in sound quality to the technological leaps we've made in the audio industry over the last few decades. I listen to a variety of Genres including Classic Rock, Jazz and POP. I'm consistently amazed at the subtle nuances revealed by these marvelous headphones. From the delicate sound of water cascading down a spring, to the robust sub harmonics emanating from an acoustic bass....the 840s can handle them all with ease. Not only do they sound good, but they're extremely comfortable too. The ear cups are soft velvet, instead of hot, sticky vinyl. The headband is self adjusting. As soon as you put them on, they automatically adjust to your head size. No need to fool around with settings. You can hand them to someone else, and they can put them on and enjoy an instant custom fit. I do wish they were foldable, but I think that's really being picky. Besides, I don't believe they can make a self adjusting headband that's also foldable. If I had to choose one feature or the other, I'd make the same choice LabTec did. I bought these specifically to use with my Rio Riot, but I would highly recommend them to augment the sound of any MP3 player, portable stereo or home stereo. Hat's off to you Labtec!
