seidhepriest's Full Review: Sennheiser PX 100 Consumer Headphones
Unlike their closed sibling, the PX200, Sennheiser PX100 are actually a clean-sounding pair of headphones. Overall sound presentation is a tad blurry, as with most "mini" headphones of this price category.
Bass is a bit too strong (girlfriend's first question after putting them on: "is the bass boost on?"), overall sounding can be somewhat too darkish, but the imaging is rather precise for the size and money asked. Timpani sound boomish and lack some of their contour, but still significantly better than some other headphones in the class. There's a good amount of detail with highpass synths "popping in" within a mix where they ought to.
Bass can be somewhat painful, especially after full-size and headphones with a more balanced reproduction. It does tend to overwhelm everything else, but it does not mask other instruments unlike other small headphones might. Some of the finer and subtler pads are there, but they're barely present though. Revealing the PX100 are not.
The PX100 are foldable, and come with a carry-case with a cable manager. Cups swivel, then the headband collapses, with one arm being laid over another (notch-to-notch).
Cable looks a bit flimsy though, of the kind that usually gets spent and gets a faulty contact either at the jack or the earcup.
The PX100 are efficient - they can be easily driven by a player with roughly 1V of battery power. PX100 are bound to work well with anything that has a headphone jack.
Other headphones in the category that might be less expensive yet are a match to, or better than the PX100: Grado IGrado, AKG K-24P, Koss Porta-Pro. Or, Grado SR-60 for just a bit more - those will be a serious upgrade in detail, presence and resolution.
