jeffs320's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1300 Printer
I am currently a network administrator for the 25th Infantry Division (Light) currently deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom V. About a month ago I was tasked to set up the network for a new site that was being stood up, and naturally, someone who has no idea what they were buying got the printers for us...input the Laserjet 1300 here.
I do not see any use for a Black and White Laser printer for home use, it is not practical. It is much more expensive, and you can't print pictures or anything on it. If you want a printer for your house, stick with a Lexmark Inkjet printer, they can be purchased for around $40 these days including both ink cartridges. If you just really want a black and white printer for your house (like if you work at home and just have 1 computer), then this printer would work well for that, but for normal use it is a waste of money.
From a Networking point of view, it is completely worthless. I administer a small network now at this site, only about about 80 computers total between classified and unclassified, and these printers don't even work well for a network this small. There is no Network card in the printer, so you have to plug it into a computer on your network (through USB is how we have it here), and share it out to the other users on the network. This doesn't seem like an unbearable task at first, but you have to remember that this computer must stay powered on at all times or no one can print to it.
Another problem we have had is with the printer staying connected to the network. I have not yet figured out exactly why it does it, but about 2 or 3 times a day we have to turn the printers off and back on again or it will not print. We are running a mixed network of Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers, and have the same problem with printers plugged into each type of system. It has only been this model printer that we have had problems with, we have some color laser printers that have had no problems - those have a network card installed and run like a champ.
The last problem we have had is that the toner seems to go faster than a bag of candy around Afghani kids...I have replaced the cartridge twice in the printer in the main office that has about 8 people printing to it, and we have only had it up for a month. This is unheard of for a laser printer, and definitely below standard.
Other than that, the print quality and speed is nice on them, so if you are going to use it on a personal computer and not a network it will work well, but as I mentioned already, this is a waste.
