About Me: Becoming a father has enriched my life to no end.

Print, Scan, Copy: All for a measly $299

Written: Nov 09 '00
Pros:Multifunction, Easy to setup and use, takes up little space, good quality copies
Cons:No USB port, not really good for photo-like copies, strictly for home use

When I bought this multifunction device at Amazon for $299, I was not expecting to receive a good quality device. I was convinced that it would be average at best. I could not have been more wrong.

Lots of features for a small price

What can you possibly expect for $299? That was exactly my question as I unwrapped and setup this the Hewlett-Packard PSC 500. Setup was a breeze and the software included was easy to install and configure. I was up and running in no time.

I tested out each feature just to see if the quality was any good. All of my documents had crisp text and the images looked great. Every picture I scanned look just as good as my friend's $200 scanner.

The copier quality is fairly good and serves its purpose well. I was happy with its decent quality.

It prints quietly and has only jammed on me a few times. I also love the fact that it doesn't take up all of my office space, yet it does everything I need to do. The price of print cartridges is reasonable at around $30 and they seem to last a long time.

My son now uses this printer for all of his school projects and homework. His teacher always compliments him on the professionalism of his work (okay, so I help a LITTLE bit).

So What Are The Drawbacks?

One drawback is that this is not a photo-quality printer like it claims to be. Your images will look good, but don't expect to put in photo paper and produce picture perfect photos. At only $300 what can you realistically expect. Also, there is no USB port which is really not a major problem. Finally, this printer is meant for home use and will probably not stand up to daily office use.

Bottom Line

This is a great multifunction device that will serve all of your families basic printing and scanning needs. It is great for families living on a tight budget.
