An adequate scanner

Cons: Software is quirky.
The Bottom Line: A good scanner if space is an issue or you wish to scan unusual sized items. Software is quirky and takes a little time to use correctly.

I have owned this scanner for about 1 1/2 years. This scanner has the ability to be folded and put away, rather than sitting and taking up room on my desk. It scans pictures, slides, 35mm negatives (using an included transparent materials adapter) and documents. It is not able to scan negatives other than 35mm. It has four buttons on the front of the scanner: Scan, copy, HP Instant Share and Power. A plus is that the scanner can be removed from its back to scan items other than documents that wouldn't fit in the scanner.
The included software (HP Photo and Imaging Software, HP Director and HP Instant Share is adequate, but does have some hangups. For example, whenever I scan a picture it tries to scan it to a default folder (in HP Photo and Imaging Software), which it can't find, instead of a folder I created (Scanned Photos under My Pictures in My Documents). There is OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software that is useful when scanning documents, which does work pretty well. I have noticed that the scans of pictures tend to be more red in tone than the original; this is correctable with photo editing software (other than the HP included software). The copy feature works pretty well.
I purchased my original scanner in November 2003. It lasted a few months, then quit working. Upon contacting HP Tech Support they did ship me a refurbished HP 4670 with very few questions asked, which is working fine at this time, Sept. 2005.
