This scanner still works great after 9 years. It uses the USB 1.1 protocol (or parallel port) so it would seem to have a data transfer speed disadvantage compared with newer scanners using the USB 2.0 protocol. If there is a difference I can't really detect it. The 5200c scans at an average speed compared to current scanners (it was considered "fast" back in 1999).
After I switched from Windows to Linux I discovered that my high-end Cannon scanner (9550f) was not supported on Linux. In contrast, the 5200c works under Linux without any special setup or driver installation.
The specs on this scanner remain more than adequate for most scanning jobs: The 5200C can scan at 600 X 1200 DPI, optically.
The scanner build quality is good- one reason why this scanner still functions perfectly many years after it was discontinued by HP.
Although this scanner is no longer available from HP- it's very inexpensive on the used auction market (~20.00 USD). If you are a Linux user, you can't go wrong picking up a 5200c for your daily scanning needs.
