Decent Monochrome Budget Printer from HP

Pros: Excellent text, decent graphics. Fast first page out. Low power consumption and noise. Networkable(w/printserver).

Cons: Pricier printer/toner to comparables. Slight curling of paper output. No parallel port. USB only

The Bottom Line: Decent budget HP printer with some flaws but overall worthwhile for people looking for a printer in SOHO use.

I purchased this printer from Office Depot for ~$150. I was looking into buying a monochrome laser printer and after researching the Internet, I narrowed my decision down to either the Samsung ML1740 or HP1012. I went to Office Depot and physically checked out both printers. Eventually, I chose HP over Samsung for the following reasons:

- Lower power consumption
- Slightly crisper graphics although both displayed great text
- Faster 1st page out although the Samsung prints at a faster rate ( 17ppm vs 15ppm )
- Less noise during standby and print job. There is no fan on the HP1012. I've heard that if you do a large print job (>50pages) the printer will down-shift its ppm output to prevent overheating but I haven't tried this out yet.
- Silver/gray two tone color looked better than Samsung's all white

Although the Samsung was cheaper ($89 after rebates vs $150) and the toner/drum was cheaper ($79.99/3000p vs $69.99/2000p), I decided that the HP was more suited to my needs and the extra cost was worth it.

Now here are some of the negatives about this printer:
- Although the first page out is pretty fast, the ppm output is not as fast as other printers in it's class.
- Possible down-shift in ppm output on large print jobs (as stated earlier ).
- Pricier than comparable printers in same class.
- No parallel port. USB connection only
- Paper is slightly curled on the sides when printed out but straightens out a bit as you let it sit.

I also purchased an Airlink mini usb print server from Fry's Electronics (on sale for $10) and was able to connect my HP1012 to my home network smoothly. I could print from any of my home computers and laptop without needing to have a dedicated machine to host the printer.

I can't attest to the long term use since I've only had the machine for a short time but so far the print-outs that I see look good for such an affordable laser printer. The only issue that bothered me was a slight curling on both sides of the paper as they come out but if you leave it sitting on the top it eventually straightens out a little.

My previous printer was a Canon inkjet which gave me headaches with the print head misaligning constantly and the ink running out very quickly.

Overall my experience has been a positive one and I would recommend it to others as long as you are okay with some of its deficiencies.
